Steel Magnolias Directed by Brent Blalock
Performances: August 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 September 4, 5, 6, 1998
A first play by Robert Harling concerning a group of gossipy southern ladies in a small town beauty parlor, the play is alternately hilarious and touching - and, in the end, deeply revealing of the strength and purposefulness which underlies the antic banter of its characters.
"Harling has given his women sharp, funny dialogue...the play builds to a conclusion that is deeply moving."--Howard Kissel, N.Y. Daily News.
The Moss Hart/George Kaufman combination is in again with this hilarious play which chronicles the tribulations of a family man who craves--and gets--"a little place in the country to call his own." Everybody knows Newton Fuller, the sentimental little American who wants just a piece of land. The play is a record of the Fuller family, which is hypnotized into taking over one of those windowless, waterless, almost roofless houses that dot the countryside. The ensuing troubles may be summed up as a search for water and a quarrel with a neighbor who owns not only the brook, but the very road that leads from the highway to the house. Once one of Jack Benny's most successful motion pictures.
Meet Me in St. Louis Directed by Wayne Williams
Performances: Nov 27, 28, Dec 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 20, 1998
The musical is a rare treasure in the musical theatre; it is the warm-hearted story of a happy family's life as they anticipate the wonders of the 1904 World's Fair and is based on the Kinsington Stories by Sally Benson and the MGM motion picture--one of Judy Garland's greatest films. The play includes seven of the best-loved songs from the movie, such as "Meet Me in St. Louis," "The Boy Next Door," "Skip to My Lou," "Under the Bamboo Tree," "The Trolley Song," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."
Come Blow Your Horn
Directed by Max Hobbs
Performances: Jan 22, 23, 29, 30, Feb 5, 6, 7, 1999
Neil Simon's fresh and delightful comedy was the surprise hit of the Broadway season when it debuted. Harry Baker, owner of the largest artificial fruit business, is the father of two sons. One is a 33-year-old playboy; the other is a different 21-year-old with an urge to assert himself. These two are continuously trying their fathers' easily abused patience. The richly comic complications that ensue are unfailingly inventive, and are never merely gags, but arise out of character.
"A slick, lively, funny comedy." N.Y. Times
"It's completely nuts and banging with laughter." N.Y. World-Telegram
Bus Stop Directed by Wayne Schaltenbrand
Performances: Mar 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27, 28, 1999
A bus out of Kansas City pulls up at a cheerful roadside diner in the middle of a howling snowstorm. All roads are blocked and four or five of the weary travelers are going to have to hold-up until morning. One passenger, in spangled nightclub gown and a seedy fur coat, is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued, captured and made love to by a young cowboy with a ranch of his own, and the romantic methods of a headstrong bull. As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the café and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own, a middle-aged scholar comes to terms with himself, and a young girl who works in the café also gets her first taste of romance. Marilyn Monroe scored one of her biggest successes in the film version of this William Inge play.
"Mr. Inge has put together an uproarious comedy that never strays from the truth."--Brooks Atkinson, N.Y. Times
Southern Fried Murder Performances: April 23, 24, 30, May 1, 7, 8, 9, 1999
Way down south in Dixie, there's something rotten in the cotton! Wealthy family matriarch Magnolia Capote has summoned her kith and kin to dinner in a fancy restaurant in order to discuss her will. But when Mrs. Capote is killed with her walking stick, mayhem ensues and her possible heirs become involved in a treasure hunt to interpret the encrypted will. Actors are called upon to mill about the audience during pre-show. The roles spoof Tennessee Williams' heroines, Bette Davis in Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte, characters from Tobacco Road, Truman Capote and other denizens of the Deep South.
La Cage aux Folles Directed by Christopher Murphy
Performances: June 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, 27, 1999
One of the all-time biggest Broadway hit musicals, and winner of the 1984 Tony Awards, adds new dimension to the comedy about gays whose 20 years of domestic tranquility are shattered when a son, fathered during a one-night fling, decides to marry the daughter of a bigoted politician. George agrees to act "normal" when he meets the father of the bride, with hilarious results.
"This is Jerry Herman's best musical yet--Happier and more buoyant than Hello, Dolly or Mame." N.Y. Post.
"The schmaltziest, most old-fashioned major musical since Annie." N.Y. Times
"Carry your maiden aunt off to see La Cage aux Folles....It's a family show...a glittering, fast-stepping extravaganza." N.Y. Daily News
