Taking This Play's Temperature

Why Fahrenheit 451 as a musical drama?

Because, all of my life, I have wanted to fall in love with various art forms and fail at them for awhile and then get fairly mediocre at them and then at least become somewhat more than good, leaning toward excellence.

Drama and musical theatre and poetry have been part of my life since I was twelve and appeared in a Christmas operetta and then moved into radio reading the comic strips to kiddies on Saturday night. I began to write for the stage in high school and did work with Laraine Day's little theatre group in the Mormon Church when I was twenty. All of my early plays were dreadful. But I made up my mind to see all of the plays and musicals I could possibly attend, over a period of twenty-five years. One of my loves, along the way, was opera. You only need to raise the curtain on TOSCA and I'm in tears before the music starts. It follows then, after so much time spent devouring poetry and attending performances, I had to dare to fail in the musical theatre. My first musical was DANDELION WINE at the Lincoln Center in New York in 1967. It did not fail. But it did not have an earthshaking survival, either. Not long after, I wrote FAHRENHEIT 451 as a straight drama, which seemed to work. The final step came five years ago when Georgia Holof and David Mettee showed up on my doorstep as strangers with half the score of the musical play already finished. I listened and invited them into my life to stay. For two summers we wrote and rehearsed and staged and restaged our almost-opera at the O'Neill Theatre Center in Connecticut. Now my love, begun so many decades ago, has joined with theirs and our strange future child is ready to be born in a public place. May I dare to predict its immediate fate? We will not fail. And, who knows, we may well have a bit more than an ordinary, amiable run.

David Landis (Fire Chief Beatty)

My parents were a published poet and a concert pianist while holding "real life" jobs as an insurance executive and a teacher. I have followed that same balancing act. At 22,1 was elected to office as the youngest officeholder in Nebraska history. After seven years on various public service boards, I was elected to the Legislature in 1978. In 1987, the Omaha World Herald described me as one of the two most effective legislators on passing bills. In other areas, I've been "Teacher of the Year" at Doane College and a rock'n'roll DJ for twenty years. I have been in Who's Who for the past several years.

This is the second world premiere of a musical for me. I did the title role in David Bell's CONAN IS A GRAND OLD NAME that played Chicago several times. Seven professional rep seasons for Nebraska Repertory Theatre have meant leads in Shakespeare, Orton, Ayckbourn, Simon and Shaw shows. I played Dr. Watson in 33 episodes of "Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Great-Granddaughter" an instructional television show for sixth graders that was on public television in several states.

I've walked the tightrope in BARNUM, ascended to Heaven in GODSPELL, proposed in MONDAY AFTER THE MIRACLE, TALLEY'S FOLLY and MAN AND SUPERMAN and frozen to death in TERRA NOVA. I've blinded horses in EOUUS, killed in DEATHTRAP and CORPSE, died in DEATHTRAP CORPSE, THE INNOCENTS, and WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION and hopped up a flight of stairs with my pants at my ankles in NOISES OFF.

My constituents don't always know what to think of me. My son, Matt, plays soccer for the University of Tulsa, my daughter Melissa, is a dancer and my wife, Melodee, is the steady, reliable zookeeper who keeps us going.

"PORCHES"

The square
that was there
was fireman's statue
that's new
the river once had bridges
the guard tower
that's new too
there were fields and hills
from here to the mall
but most of all I remember

There used to be porches
they used to have chairs
we'd sit there and talk
maybe go for a walk
on smooth cement sidewalks
leading right up to the porches

There used to be windows
you could see out and in
you could let in fresh air
or sit there and stare
a man had time to ponder
watching people on their porches

We cried about injustice
what else could we do
cried when love began and when it died
sad movies
parades could make us cry
sometimes we felt lonely
without even knowing why

But
there used to be neighbors
they used to drop in
without transit control
up the sidewalk they'd stroll
and welcome made us merry
when there used to be porches
